Igniter clicks but won’t light
Nine times out of ten this is grease or moisture sitting between the spark electrode and the burner cap. Pull the burner cap off (cold cooktop, gas off at the knob) and wipe the electrode with a dry cloth, make sure the cap is sitting flush. If the click is there and gas is on but you still get no flame, the electrode has cracked or the spark module is failing. That’s licensed work: the panel has to come off and the gas line stays live during diagnosis.
Weak, yellow, or lazy flame
A healthy gas flame burns blue with a sharp inner cone. Yellow tips, soot on the pan base, or a flame that flutters means the air-to-gas ratio is wrong. Usually a blocked burner port from a boil-over, a regulator drifting out of spec, or low gas pressure across the whole house, which often shows up at the hot water unit too. Clean the burner first. If it stays yellow, it needs a licensed gas fitter with a manometer.
Smell of gas near the knobs
The valve under each knob has a seal that hardens over the years. On older units it can leak slightly even when the knob is off, and you won’t always notice it until you’re standing close. This is a strip-and-reseal job with replacement valves. Don’t keep using the cooktop.

Usually a clogged burner port or a misaligned cap from cleaning. Soak the burner head and cap in warm soapy water, clear the ports with a fine pin, dry fully, refit. Burner head wobbles or sits crooked after cleaning
