Yes. Under the NSW Plumbing and Drainage Act 2011, any work involving water supply pipework connected to a fire hose reel system must be carried out by a licensed plumber. This includes new installations, replacement of ageing pipework and reels, hydrant booster connections, and rectification work flagged after a building inspection. The equipment itself may be handled by a fire protection contractor, but the plumbing connection and supply side is licensed plumbing work.

Your fire safety inspector documents the defect as part of the AFSS process. A licensed plumber then needs to carry out the plumbing rectification — this might be replacing a failed reel, repairing or replacing supply pipework, or rectifying a hydrant booster connection. Once the plumbing work is complete and compliance documentation is provided, your fire protection contractor can complete the certification and the AFSS can be submitted. The sticking point is usually getting both trades coordinated and on site promptly. We manage this regularly for strata and commercial buildings across the Hills District and Blacktown areas.

We carry out a site visit to assess the existing pipework, reel condition, and connection points, then provide a written quote with a scope of works document suitable for committee review and approval.
