Dripping Tap Repairs, Washers and Tap Reseating

Need your taps repaired or replaced? We’re the right plumbers for you!

Plumber For New Taps

The drip that is costing you more than you think

A tap that drips once a second wastes thousands of litres a year, and you pay for every one of them. It also gets worse, not better. What starts as a drip becomes a tap you have to lean on to shut off, and then a tap that will not shut off at all.

Most dripping taps are a small job. The trick is fixing the right thing.

Why taps drip, and what actually fixes it

A worn washer

The most common cause. The rubber washer inside the tap compresses and hardens over time until it no longer seals. Replacing it is straightforward and usually solves it.

A damaged tap seat

Here is where most DIY repairs fail. The washer presses down onto a brass seat inside the tap body. Over years that seat becomes pitted and scored, and once it does, a brand new washer will not seal against it either.

That is why the tap starts dripping again a week after someone changed the washer. The washer was never the whole problem.

Tap reseating

Reseating machines the damaged seat smooth again so a new washer has a flat surface to seal against. It takes the right tool and it is the difference between a repair that lasts years and one that lasts a fortnight.

If your taps have been washered before and started dripping again, reseating is almost certainly what they need.

Worn spindles and O rings

Where the drip is coming from around the handle rather than the spout, it is usually the spindle O ring.

Failed ceramic cartridges

Mixer taps do not have washers. They have a ceramic cartridge, and when that wears the fix is a replacement cartridge matched to the brand.

High water pressure

If taps in the house keep failing early, the pressure is often the reason. It shortens the life of every washer, seal and flexible hose in the place. Worth testing if this keeps happening.

Why a dripping tap is worth fixing sooner rather than later

It is tempting to live with a drip, but there are a few good reasons not to. The first is water waste. A steady drip adds up to a surprising amount of water over a month, and you are paying for every drop on your bill. The second is that a drip rarely fixes itself and usually gets worse. A small weep from a worn washer today can turn into a constant run or a tap that will not shut off at all.

The third reason is damage. A leaking tap can leave water sitting where it should not, which can stain benchtops, mark cabinetry, and over time cause problems under sinks and vanities. An outdoor tap that leaks against a wall can keep an area damp for months. Catching it early keeps a cheap repair from becoming a bigger one. We also install new taps for renovations, replacements or aesthetic upgrades.

We just moved into our new home and walked in to find 2 leaks coming from the downstairs bathroom ceiling. We called The Plumbing Paramedics and they sent Kyle over. He was friendly and a good communicator. He was thorough when seeking to find the leak. He was able to locate the issue in a damaged upstairs toilet by performing a leak detection test. He removed the damaged toilet and installed a new one for us. If you want an efficient plumbing service and clear communication from office staff, call The Plumbing Paramedics.

We recently experienced a plumbing emergency with water leaking from our ceiling and called Plumbing Paramedics for help. Kyle and Josh arrived promptly and quickly identified the source as a burst pipe. They were professional and knowledgeable throughout, taking the time to clearly explain the issue before proceeding, and completed the repair along with installing a new pressure valve in under 90 minutes. As a family with young children, we greatly appreciated their efficiency and the peace of mind their work provided. We highly recommend them and will use them again!

Frequently Asked Tap Questions

Almost always the tap seat. The seat is pitted, so the new washer cannot seal against it. It needs reseating, not another washer.

Machining the brass seat inside the tap body smooth again so a washer can seal properly. It needs a reseating tool and it is what makes the repair last.

Usually repair, if the tap is decent quality and the body is sound. If it is a cheap tap or the body is corroded, replacing can be better value. We will tell you which.

Yes, usually with a new ceramic cartridge rather than a whole new tap.

A drip a second is thousands of litres a year, and it appears on your bill.

Usually. Send a photo of the tap and any brand marking and we will tell you before we come out.

Often water pressure. High pressure destroys washers and seals across the whole house. Worth testing.
