Do I Need a tempering valve?
A tempering valve mixes hot water from your storage tank with cold water from the mains so it reaches your shower, bath and basin at a safe 50°C, even though the tank itself is kept at 60°C or higher to prevent Legionella growth. In NSW, one is legally required whenever a hot water system is replaced or new hot water pipework is installed.

Why Your Hot Water Is Stored Hotter Than It Reaches Your Shower
Water sitting in a hot water storage tank needs to be hot.
It needs to be 60°C, to prevent Legionella bacteria growing.
But 60°C water can cause a serious burn during showering or bathing.
A tempering valves mixes cold water with the hot water so it is at 50°C, hot enough to have a hot shower but not hot enough to burn a child if they turn on the hot water in a shower un supervised.
One valve fitted will protect all showes, baths and hand basins, while the kitchen and laundry outlets are usually left untempered since dishwashers and washing machines work better with hotter water.

That covers the valve itself, installation by a licensed plumber, and the delivery temperature set correctly, usually completed in a single visit. Where a job falls in that range depends on your system and how accessible the pipework is, and we’ll confirm the price before starting any work.

When a Tempering Valve Is Required
NSW adopted the Plumbing Code of Australia in July 2013, requiring a temperature control device when a hot water system is replaced or new hot water pipework is installed, such as during an extension or bathroom renovation. There’s an exemption for factory pre-set continuous flow units that can’t deliver above 50°C.
If your hot water system was installed before the rules changed and it’s still running, there’s no legal obligation to retrofit one. It’s a safety upgrade, not a compliance problem, and any plumber telling you otherwise is arguing from the wrong angle. That said, many households choose to fit one anyway, particularly where young children, elderly parents, or anyone with reduced mobility uses the bathroom.
Signs Your Existing Valve Needs Attention
Tempering valves wear out. Typical service life is around five to eight years, shorter in hard water areas. When one starts to fail you’ll usually notice water getting hotter than it used to, or a drop in hot water pressure. A correctly sized and installed valve shouldn’t affect your pressure at all, so if yours has dropped, it’s worth having a licensed plumber test the valve rather than assuming it’s unrelated.
