Water Hammer Repairs Sydney
Need a water hammer issue repaired? We’re the right plumbers for you!

A Water Hammer Is That bang in the walls when a tap shuts off
You turn off a tap, or the washing machine finishes filling, and the pipes go off like someone hit the wall with a hammer. That noise is water hammer, and it is not just annoying.
It is a pressure shock travelling through your pipework, and over time it loosens fittings, splits flexible hoses and cracks joints.
We diagnose and fix water hammer across the Hills District and north west Sydney.
What causes water hammer
- A valve closing too fast. When a tap, a solenoid valve in an appliance, or a mixer shuts suddenly, the water moving in the pipe has nowhere to go. That energy hits the closed valve and bounces back through the system.
- Water pressure that is too high. High incoming pressure makes every shock harder. This is the most common underlying cause we find, and it is also the one that damages everything else in the house.
- Pipes that are not secured properly. A pipe that can move in the wall will bang against the frame when the shock hits. Sometimes that is the entire problem.
- Worn tap washers and valves. A failing washer can make a tap shudder as it closes.
- Appliances with fast acting valves. Washing machines and dishwashers close their inlet valves very quickly, which is why the bang so often happens when they are running.
Why it is worth fixing rather than living with
Water hammer is a symptom, and the pressure behind it is what does the damage. The same shock that makes the noise is working on every joint, fitting and flexible hose in the house.
Burst flexible hoses are the big one. A flexi hose under a vanity that lets go while nobody is home is one of the most common and most expensive water damage claims in Australian homes. High pressure and repeated shock are exactly what shortens their life.
So the noise is the warning. The repair is usually cheaper than the thing it prevents.

What Sydney Locals Say About Us
How we fix A Water Hammer Problem
Water pressure test
We start by measuring the incoming pressure. If it is too high, that is usually the root cause and everything else is a symptom.
Pressure limiting valve
Where pressure is the cause, fitting or replacing a pressure limiting valve fixes the hammer and protects the rest of the plumbing at the same time. Our pressure reducing valve page covers this in detail.
Water hammer arrestors
Where the shock is coming from a specific appliance or valve, an arrestor fitted at the right point absorbs it. Fitted in the wrong place it does nothing, which is why the diagnosis matters more than the part.
Securing loose pipework
Where the banging is a pipe moving against the structure, we secure it properly.
Tap and valve repairs
Worn tap washers and failing valves get replaced.
Checking your flexible hoses
While we are there we check the flexi hoses, because water hammer and old hoses are a bad combination.
